We often get repeated posts in our Mums on a Budget Australia Nationwide Facebook group like:

"What is the best car insurance?"

"What is the cheapest home insurance?"

"I am paying $xx for home and contents insurance? Is this too much?"

"What car insurance company do you recommend?"

"What health insurance company is cheapest?"

"I need a cheaper life insurance company. Who are you with?"

🚗 Why “What is the best car insurance?” can't be answered universally:

1. “Best” is subjective.

What’s best for:

A 20-year-old driving a used car in a city?

A 45-year-old with a family and a new SUV in a rural area?

A pensioner who only drives occasionally?

These people need very different kinds of cover.

2. Everyone values different things:

Some people care most about:

Price (cheapest monthly premium)

Customer service (fast claims processing, 24/7 support)

Inclusions (windscreen cover, rental car, roadside assistance)

Excess flexibility (ability to raise or lower excess)

Brand reputation or user reviews

So “best” depends on what matters most to you.

3. Cover levels vary massively

Some people want:

Comprehensive cover (includes theft, fire, damage to your car and others)

Third party only (just covers damage to other people’s property)

Third party, fire & theft

Each insurer may be the “best” in only one of those categories.

4. It changes based on your personal details

Insurers price and assess risk based on:

Your age

Your driving history

Where you live

Where the car is parked

The car itself (make/model/year)

Even if an insurer is “great,” they may not offer a good deal to you.

✅ So, what should you ask instead?

A better question would be:

“What is the best car insurance for my situation?”

And include:

What type of cover you want (comprehensive vs third party)

Your priorities (cheapest, best customer service, fastest claims, etc.)

Your location and car (general area + type of car)

Then, it’s possible to give you tailored recommendations or a shortlist.
